The setup concludes when you boot up the PS2 and run Sony's HDD Utility Disc, which includes software to browse, update and manage the drive's contents. Then click the HDD onto the Network Adaptor, slide it into the bay, and tighten its mounting screws (no special tools are needed the edge of a dime will turn those screws). Remove the Network Adapter from the back of the PS2 if you're adding one with the HDD, remove the expansion bay cover instead. The HDD's actual installation shouldn't challenge anyone who has, say, added memory to their PC. So PS2 users who haven't bought the Network Adaptor yet will have to spend an extra $40 on one first. But it requires Sony's Network Adaptor as well: It's only available bundled with Square Enix's new Final Fantasy XI game, which a) comes preloaded on the drive, and b) requires an Internet connection. Sony's HDD takes advantage of the expansion bay the company thoughtfully built into the PS2. Numerous Xbox games use the hard drive to store saved games, downloadable content from Microsoft's Xbox Live online service and even custom soundtracks (the Xbox can rip an audio CD to the hard drive, allowing you to listen to that while playing the title of your choice). Microsoft designed the Xbox with its own built-in hard drive (albeit a smaller, 10-gig model) for the same reasons, and the flexibility it has allowed has become a major selling point for Microsoft's black-and-green console. Just like on a PC, you can download new levels, maps and characters - not to mention bug fixes. Instead of being confined to the 8 megabytes available in a standard memory card - barely enough to store an updated roster of players for a sports game - Sony's $100 HDD (short for "hard disk drive") claims 40 gigabytes of storage.

Last month brought a PS2 upgrade that could be equally significant, an add-on hard drive that gives this console the persistent memory it's never really had before. In August 2002, for example, Sony released its Network Adaptor add-on, which brought online gameplay to the PS2 - and created a market for Internet-enabled console games that Microsoft quickly pursued with its Xbox Live service. Sony's PlayStation 2 - now almost four years old - has been at the forefront of this trend.
Now game consoles themselves are starting to look like PCs in their own way: Just like traditional desktops, they can be upgraded with add-on hardware.
